FPL 2021/22 : Gameweek 1 – Captain Picks :

2 min read
Your Captain scores double points each week in FPL. With the potential to double the score of one of your most important players, your captain alone can often score more points than several of your other players each week. Each week, we’ll provide an article looking at 3 captain choices – one recommended, one strong alternative, and one differential, or ‘punty’ choice. For GW1, we present to you Salah, Kane and Wilson. • M Salah (Fulham (A)) (61% ownership) – FPL’s best asset for some time now. Top points scorer for 3 seasons, including last season. Returned in GW1 for each of the last 5 seasons (including 17 points and 20 points in the past 2 seasons). Nailed to start for one of the best, most attacking teams in the league. On penalties. 15 goals and 10 assists in his first 17 games last season, and despite a supposed dip in form post AFCON, scored on the final day of last season (his 23rd in the league that year). Coming up against a Fulham side who conceded the most goals in the championship of the 3 promoted sides (43, just 2 less than Millwall or West Brom). Scored against Fulham both of the last 2 seasons they were in the Prem, including in this fixture in 2020. Scored 3 goals in pre-season. There are many many reasons to captain Mo Salah in GW1. The obvious choice for a reason.     • H Kane (Southampton (H)) (27% ownership) – Has his worst goalscoring season in 8 years last season, with a mere 17 league goals. Almost all of those came in the second half of the season, including 5 in the last 5 games. As nailed on an asset as they come. On penalties. Didn’t start first game last season due to transfer speculation, but 2 goals in GW1 in 2019 reminds us what he’s capable of. Been gifted a plum first fixture at home against Southampton, who conceded 14 goals more than relegated Burnley last year. Scored 5 goals in 4 games in pre-season. Son is almost as good a captaincy choice (2 goals, 4 assists in pre-season).       •• C Wilson – (Nottm Forest (H)) (3% ownership) – Generally for the third captaincy pick, I’ll try to go for a lower ownership, more ‘punty’ choice – at just 3%, Callum Wilson certainly fits the bill. Newcastle are the Premier League’s form team in 2022 (behind only Liverpool and Man City). Wilson is their leading striker, with 20 goals in 44 PL games for the club, and reunited with his old manager Eddie Howe. Newcastle have strengthened in pre-season with signings like Pope and Botman to shore up their defence, but Wilson remains the main man up front. Finished as Newcastle’s top scorer last season despite starting just 16 PL games. Best shot conversion rate of any striker in the PL over the past 2 seasons (Way above Salah and Kane). When he’s fit, he’s lethal, and at home against a promoted club is as good a place to start as any.     Our top pick, of course, is Mo Salah! Who will your #GW1 captain be? Good luck everyone! #FPL #GW1 <Admin #SBillington>
